Adult kickboxing classes are usually better for beginners than learning from videos alone because you receive live coaching, immediate corrections, proper pad work and structured training. Online videos can certainly help, but they cannot see your mistakes, adjust your technique or replace an experienced instructor standing in front of you.
I completely understand why people look online first.
You can find thousands of kickboxing videos in seconds.
No travelling.
No timetable.
Nobody sees you get the footwork wrong.
You can even practise in the kitchen if you really want to.
Convenient? Absolutely.
The problem is that the person on the screen cannot see you.
They don’t know if your stance is too narrow.
They can’t see your guard dropping.
They don’t know if you’re throwing a kick badly or standing too close to the target.
That’s where live coaching starts to matter.
At Blaze Martial Arts, our instructors don’t simply demonstrate a technique and then leave everybody to copy it.
We teach.
We move around the class.
We watch people train.
We correct mistakes.
We help people improve.

For me, that hands-on teaching is one of the biggest differences between joining a real class and trying to teach yourself from a screen.
Why Are Adult Kickboxing Classes Better Than Online Training?
Adult kickboxing classes give beginners feedback while they are actually learning. That means technical mistakes can be corrected before they become habits.
After around 40 years in martial arts, I’ve seen how quickly a small mistake can become somebody’s normal way of moving.
Take a basic punch.
On a video, it looks straightforward enough.
Turn the shoulder.
Extend the arm.
Bring it back.
But what if you’re leaning forwards?
What if your other hand drops every time you punch?
What if your feet are positioned badly?
The video carries on regardless.
A good instructor doesn’t.
At Blaze Martial Arts, we demonstrate a technique and then move around the room while people practise.
If something is wrong, we correct it.
If someone is struggling, we help them.
If somebody is ready for the next detail, we give them that too.
That approach is especially valuable for beginner kickboxing because the early lessons create the foundations for everything that follows.
Good technique is much easier to build than bad technique is to undo.
Do I Need to Be Fit Before Starting Adult Kickboxing Classes?
No. You don’t need to get fit before starting adult kickboxing classes. Training is one of the ways you become fitter.
This is one of the excuses I hear most often from adults.
“I’d like to try it, but I need to get a bit fitter first.”
You know what normally happens?
Three months later they’re still planning to get fit enough to start getting fit.
There’s no fitness entrance exam.
Some of our students already exercise regularly.
Others haven’t done anything particularly active for years.
That’s fine.
You train.
You improve.
Your fitness gradually develops.
The NHS recommends regular physical activity for adults and includes martial arts among examples of vigorous physical activity.
You can read the NHS guidance here:
That doesn’t mean every kickboxing lesson has to leave you crawling out of the hall.
It means regular movement matters.
You don’t need to be fit before you begin. You begin, and your fitness improves from there.
What Can a Live Kickboxing Class Give You That YouTube Cannot?
A live class gives you timing, distance, reaction, feedback and another person to train with. Those things are difficult to reproduce properly when you are standing alone in front of a screen.
Pad work is a very simple example.
Hitting a pad held by another person teaches you things that shadow boxing alone cannot.
The target moves.
The distance changes.
Your timing matters.
Your partner reacts.
You have to adapt.
There is also an atmosphere in a class that you simply don’t get at home.
At our Bracknell school at St Joseph’s School, the adult class starts at 7.00 pm on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
By then, the children’s classes have finished and the feel of the room changes.
You hear gloves hitting pads.
You hear combinations being called.
You hear people encouraging each other when the session gets harder.
That matters.
You can pause an online workout.
Your training partner looking at you halfway through a combination tends to have a slightly different opinion.
Are Kickboxing Classes in Bracknell Only for People Who Want to Fight?
No. Most people attending kickboxing classes don’t have to compete. Some enjoy competition, while others train for fitness, confidence, self-defence or simply because they enjoy learning something new.
Blaze Martial Arts does have a fight team.
It’s led by Justyn, our 7th Dan Chief instructor and Ollie, our 4th Dan instructor, and our competitors regularly attend tournaments.
That opportunity is there.
It isn’t compulsory.
Some adults enjoy the challenge of competition.
Others have absolutely no interest in getting into a ring.
Both can become very good martial artists.
Some people come to us because they want better fitness.
Some want practical self-defence.
Some simply want one evening a week where they can stop thinking about work, phones and everything else happening outside the training hall.
Those are all perfectly good reasons to train.
Blaze Martial Arts has been established for 24 years and currently teaches approximately 380 active students each week.
Our main classes are taught by black-belt instructors with at least 15 years of martial arts experience.
Those figures matter because experience gives you perspective.
You learn very quickly that not everybody wants exactly the same thing from martial arts.
Is Training in Person Safer Than Teaching Yourself?
In my opinion, yes, particularly when you’re new. An experienced instructor can watch the way you move and correct poor technique before it becomes repetitive.
No physical activity is completely risk-free.
Kickboxing is no different.
What matters is how it is taught.
Beginners should be introduced gradually and trained according to their current ability and experience.
Blaze Martial Arts has achieved the Safeguarding Code in Martial Arts, which recognises martial arts organisations demonstrating appropriate safeguarding standards.
You can visit the official Safeguarding Code website here
Sport England also provides information about safeguarding within martial arts.
You can read that guidance here
Even for adults, the wider culture of a martial arts school matters.
You should feel comfortable asking questions.
You should be corrected without being made to feel stupid.
You should know who is teaching you.
That sounds basic.
It matters.
What Does Long-Term Kickboxing Training Actually Look Like?
Long-term training is simply the result of continuing to turn up, learn and improve. Nobody starts as an expert, and most progress comes from hundreds of fairly ordinary lessons rather than one magical session.
Cyrus is one of my favourite examples.
He joined Blaze Martial Arts when he was five years old.
He’s now 22 and a 2nd Dan black belt.
Over those years he became an excellent fighter, competed many times, won trophies and medals and developed into one of our main instructors at Bracknell.
He can now lead classes himself.
That didn’t happen because he found the right ten-minute training video online.
It happened because he trained.
Week after week.
Year after year.
Online resources can certainly help somebody who already trains.
There is some excellent martial arts material available online.
I use technology myself.
But I would never swap real coaching for it.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can adults start kickboxing with no experience?
Yes. Blaze Martial Arts welcomes complete beginners, so you don’t need any previous martial arts experience. We teach the basics from the start, including stance, movement, punches, kicks and combinations. Instructors then watch you practise and correct your technique as you go.
What should I wear to my first adult kickboxing class?
Comfortable sports clothing is ideal for your first lesson. You don’t need to buy martial arts equipment before trying a class. Wear something that allows you to move freely, bring some water and concentrate on enjoying the experience rather than worrying about looking like a kickboxer immediately.
Will I have to spar during my first kickboxing lesson?
No. Beginners aren’t expected to jump straight into advanced training. Your first lessons concentrate on learning the basics, developing movement, practising techniques and becoming comfortable in the class environment. Training progresses according to your experience, ability and confidence.
Are adult kickboxing classes good for fitness?
Yes. Kickboxing can provide a demanding cardiovascular workout while developing coordination, balance and muscular endurance. The intensity can be adjusted according to your current ability. Regular training is far more useful than doing one exhausting workout and then avoiding exercise for the following three weeks.
